Tim Jefferson

Tim has led The Human Chain, a UK-based practice specialising in business and technology consultancy in mobile and digital since 2000. He is a senior management consultant with over 30 years of commercial and technical experience and well-known as a thought leader in mobile and digital especially in NFC/contactless (in all form factors) and more recently Payments, Identity, Authentication and Biometrics. He is a natural enthusiast for his subject in helping businesses use mobile and digital technologies to drive new revenue opportunities, reduce complexity/costs and deepen engagement with their end users. Tim uses his technical understanding of mobile, web and digital to influence and drive senior management understanding and thinking about how to define and bring to market new products and services. He has worked on projects in Europe, Asia and North America helping telco’s, service providers (transit authorities, banks, retailers etc), payment scheme operators and technology providers understand, scope and deploy new customer-centric mobile and web-based services. 

Tim is a thought leader – chairing and facilitating industry events as well as authoring numerous reports and white papers. He also was European marketing chair for the NFC Forum

Transit

 

  • Transport for London - Tim led a team from The Human Chain that worked with TfL, Cubic and EDS on the Future Ticketing Project. Key projects focus areas were: review and analysis of the existing oyster card implementation, in order to replace by a combination of mobile and open loop payment cards. Evaluation of mobile NFC for ticketing and Impact analysis on existing Oyster card scheme. Definition and scoping of ‘pay at gate’ open EMV payment solution (card and mobile) including back-end integration with existing legacy infrastructure

  • Cubic - Provided senior consultancy on the use of mobile for transit ticketing, not only in relation to TfL but also other transit operators in Europe and America. Co-authored technical specification for bus communications for TfL

Identity and Authentication

 

  • GOV.UK.Verify – Tim led a team conducting a go-to-the-market review of the opportunity space for a technology provider to become a GOV.UK.Verify Identity Provider (IDP) and provide a data aggregation service for their vertical segment. The team also conducted a critical review of existing identity and authentication services.   

  • Assure UK – Active SteerCo member developing the commercial marketplace for a neutral identity attribute exchange. Go to market analysis including use case development, business modelling and ecosystem development

  • CGI – Tim provided identity and authentication subject matter expertise to support the government and commercial bid teams. He delivered knowledge transfer and fast learning through workshops and 121s to rapidly increase in-house knowledge and expertise on identity ecosystem development in the UK and internationally, especially regarding MNO strategy.

  • AT&T and SecureKey – Tim led the team that scoped, delivered and now manages a 500 user mobile and web-based banking demo/pilot service, using strong multifactor authentication on iOS and Android platforms, Mobile and Web apps using secure elements, fingerprint and NFC/contactless.

 

Mobile and Payments

 

  • Payment Scheme – Provided PSD2 consulting to explore the opportunities and challenges of PSD2 and XS2A for the scheme and its member retail banks

  • BarclayCard – Mobile Payment Deployment – Tim led the technical project management to support a solutions provider in developing mobile wallet payment applications for NFC payments and ticketing. Provided technical consultancy to the development team to ensure effective mobile application development and e2e testing

  • Trüb (Switzerland) – Led The Human Chain team in providing mobile market intelligence, education and strategy. Mobile Payments TSM – market analysis, service definition and value proposition development. Client engagement strategy and execution

  • Ericsson - Tim lead a team that carried out a detailed strategic market entry study and market engagement for all NFC TSM opportunities for Ericsson in Europe and North

  • Big 4 Management Consultancy - MNO P2P payments analysis and then strategy for implementation of P2P NFC payments solution in MNO multi-country role out

  • Royal Mail Group – Led the strategic review and validation of new e-commerce secure pin solution. Also built a value proposition to validate with e-tailers and PSPs for a new payments service from RMG. Also market tested new mobile value propositions from RMG in the payments and postal markets

  • Major Device Manufacturer  - Tim capture business and technical requirements to add card payments acceptance functionality to mobile devices. Carried out a payments acceptance solutions market analysis. Defined and managed end to end RFI process to procure defined solution

  • World Leading Technology Provider – Tim led a team carrying out extensive market entry analysis – both business and technical for NFC/contactless smart cards and SIMs.

  • Vodafone -  Management consultancy projects  – Tim led teams capturing business and technical requirements to design, build and implement GPRS, 3G, NFC business and use case development.
